‘A couple of years ago, whilst lamenting the fact that there are so many
translations I would like to do, and that others would benefit from my
doing, for which no single client could be found to cover the cost at a rate
of pay sufficient to cover my expenses (thus allowing me to give the task
the attention it deserved), it occurred to me that, if one client could not be
found to pay for translations of, say, the works of Ōsugi Sakae or the final
reports of the German parliamentary inquiries into state collusion with
fascist paramilitaries, then perhaps many ‘clients’ could be found who would each contribute a little to the cost. The resultant translation would
then be freely available to all (with attribution to me as translator and the
Crowdfunded Translation Project as having funded it). The only requirements
would be the absence of any legal restrictions on translation and
reproduction and the presence, on my part, of interest in working on it.’
