Élise Hendrick has been working as a freelance translator of a wide variety
of medical, legal, technical, literary, and political material since
the late 1990s. Her working languages include Russian, Japanese, German,
Spanish, French, Italian, Norwegian, Dutch, Portuguese, English,
Swedish, Danish, Flemish, Afrikaans, Bosnian, Serbian, Croatian, Bulgarian,
Romanian, Korean, Catalan, and Yiddish, and are likely to expand
soon to include Chinese (simplified and traditional) and Finnish.
Her published translations include the first full-length English translation of Aleksandra Kollontai’s 1909 book The Social Basis of the Female Question (coming 13 January 2026 from Haymarket) and Juan Domingo Sánchez Estop’s Althusser and Spinoza: Detours and Returns (Edinburgh University Press, 2026).
In addition to her work as a translator, she is also a writer, editor (including
the structural and developmental editing of Jay Spencer Green’s
award-winning novel Breakfast at Cannibal Joe’s), and YouTube / Twitch
streamer, who can be found at Hyperpolyglotting with Élise (language talk
and game streaming) and the Untitled Anarchist Seagull Channel (political
satire and analysis).
As part of her Crowdfunded Translation Project, she is currently translating the long-overlooked works of Inessa Armand.
